Trabzon Airport Guide

Trabzon Airport serves the nearby city of Trabzon, otherwise known by its former name of Trebizond. By far the most convenient ways to get into the city is by collecting your pre-booked hire car from the airport but you can also enjoy the experience of the local bus or the rollercoaster taxi rides.

Getting to Trabzon Airport isn’t that easy unless you are travelling from Germany. Because of the number of Turkish migrant workers in Germany you’ll find three routes from Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Stuttgart. UK travellers to Trabzon would be best advised to take a flight to Frankfurt and connect there.

Trabzon is a fascinating city, one of the biggest on Turkey’s northern coast. It was the capital of the Trebizond Empire for many years and has a great history attached to it, much of which is still in evidence today. Try the Aya Sofya Church, now a museum, for information about the city and make sure you don’t miss a trip to Sumela Monastery, perched high on a dizzyingly steep mountain. Despite years of mindless vandalism, the Turkish authorities have now begun to renovate the monastery as a museum and it’s a spectacular place to visit.
