Sapporo Chitose Airport Guide

New Chitose Airport is the third busiest in Japan and is located three miles from the city of Chitose, just outside the metropolitan area of Sapporo. The airport is connected to Sapporo by train but hiring a car from the airport is the preferred way of getting into the city. There are plenty of international flights but only to south east Asian countries. Travellers from other countries will have to use a hub airport in Asia to get to Sapporo such as Hong Kong or Tokyo Narita.

Sapporo is one of Japan’s newest cities and only 150 years ago had just a handful of inhabitants. Its only old building from that time is the clock tower which is regularly besieged by hordes of Japanese tourists and is often held out to be disappointing. The Ishiya Chocolate Factory is one of the highlights of the city and reputedly produces some of the world’s finest chocolate at an equally fine price!

Sapporo is also famous for the beer that’s brewed there and aficionados can tour the factory, seeing how it is produced and sampling the golden brew afterwards.
