SUMMARY

Dublin Airport is located in Collinstown. This is the main Republic of Ireland airport and in 2009 served 20.5 million passengers. It is also the busiest airport in the entire country. The main traffic is with Irish carrier Aer Lingus and there are low-cost flights within airlines such as Ryanair which also has a base at the airport.

Dublin airport serves a range of domestic flights to other cities in Ireland and short haul European flights including connections with five London airports. The route between Dublin and London is one of the world's busiest. There are also some long haul flights to countries in the Middle East such as Bahrain and Abu Dhabi. If you're flying to America it is possible to get border preclearance. Terminal 1 was opened in 1972 but since then the various piers have been upgraded. Work was started on terminal 2 in 2007 and when it is completed capacity should increase by 15 million passengers.

HISTORY

Aer Lingus started flights in 1936 from a military aerodrome near to the present site of Dublin Airport. The decision was soon taken to build a full civil airport. The first flight left from Dublin to Liverpool in 1940. Work on a full terminal began (which is now a listed building) and three new concrete runways were completed by 1947. Over the next decade passenger traffic grew unchecked with the inclusion of more flights including an Aer Lingus trans-Atlantic service which stopped at Shannon airport. By the 1980s there were more than 5 million annual passengers and regular fights to and from London. In the 1990s transatlantic flights could be undertaken without the need to go through Shannon. More recently the growing prosperity of Ireland meant that for the first time in 2006 there were more outbound flights from Dublin airport than inbound flights.
