Dubai General Information

As one of the seven entities which make up the United Arab Emirates Dubai is a modern, progressive city. In recent years Dubai has become an increasingly popular tourist destination. A city which is surrounded by desert yet has a fully modern infrastructure, fairly open standards compared to other Arab nations and extremely good facilities.

Dubai is located conveniently close to Europe (a short 5 hour plane flight) and even closer to most places in the Middle East and India. This makes Dubai a great choice for those people looking for an exotic vacation, yet one which is on a tight schedule.

A holiday in Dubai can encompass a whole range of activities including lazing on the pristine white beaches, partaking of the world class shopping facilities, taking in a desert safari by jeep or partying the night away in one of Dubai’s surprisingly boisterous night spots.

Dubai can be very hot in summer months, due to its location upon a strip of desert. The best time to visit Dubai is in the cooler months from September to May. Visitors to Dubai are advised to use a good sun block at all times, the heat is dry and this can lead to people being unaware of how long they have actually exposed themselves to the sun’s harmful rays.

Dubai is served by no fewer than three international airports. The largest of these and a major Middle Eastern travel hub is Dubai International Airport, which has grown at an alarming rate over the last five years. The duty free shopping available in Dubai International Airport is considered to be exceptional. The slightly smaller Sharjah International Airport is located a short 30 minute drive from Dubai proper. This is the airport used by the budget air carriers and it is an important Middle Eastern hub in its own right. Formerly named the Dubai World Central, Maktoum International Airport is still under construction, and when completed will be one of the largest airports in the world.

Travelling around Dubai can be complicated, the options are fairly limited. Taxi is probably the easiest way to explore Dubai, although there is a local bus service, which is not particularly tourist friendly. Travelling by hire car in Dubai is possibly the best option, roads are well maintained and traffic congestion is minimal. Peak hours can be problematic but during the rest of the day the roads are relatively clear.
