Van Airport Guide
Van Airport is better known as Van Ferit Melen Airport and is a couple of miles outside the city of Van and not far from the shores of the vast Lake Van. There are no direct flights from the UK and only flights from Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya and Ankara to Van. Travellers from the UK would be advised to get the easyJet budget flight to Istanbul and then connect from there although flights to Izmir and Antalya are both easily obtained from the UK.
The city of Van is very attractive and the area around it and around the lake, even more so. Within Van, make sure you visit the old castle which has the most spectacular views out over the city and lake. The Armenian Church on an island in the lake is also a magical place to visit. After many years spent restoring it, the church reopened to display its magnificent frescoes only to close again after the recent earthquake brought cracks to its roof. It is still currently closed.
The region around the lake is beautiful with snow-capped or cloud crested mountains and the inky blue waters of the lake. Driving the circumference of the lake is a great way to see it from different perspectives.
