Alta Airport Guide

Alta Airport serves the popular city of Alta, the largest in Finnmark. Despite having mainly domestic flights and only two charter holiday flights to Bulgaria and Crete, it’s the busiest airport in northern Norway. The airport has several flights to Oslo’s Gardermoen and Tromso airports through which it’s possible to connect from airports in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. It’s only two and a half miles from the centre of Alta and a hire car is certainly the best means of making the transfer between airport and accommodation.

The city is known as the ‘Aurora Borealis Capital’ as the fascinating light show of the northern lights is beautiful this far north, especially out in the countryside in winter. It’s hard to believe that people would live in such a bleak and remote region but a trip out to Hjemmeluft will show you one of the five sites which have prehistoric rock carvings, evidence that people have lived there for thousands of years.
