Mytilene is a modern town and is the capital city of Lesbos.  The island of Lesbos is the third largest Greek island after Crete and Evia and is close to the Turkish mainland.  It is quite a large town with attractive suburbs.  The town has many beautiful mansions, picturesque houses and churches.  The waterfront is very colourful with hotels, coffee shops, restaurants, travel agencies and shipping company offices.

The port is dominated by the church of St Therapon with its impressive and elaborate dome.  The waterfront is an ideal place for a stroll, particularly during the evening.  Ermou Street, which is situated adjacent to the waterfront, is the main shopping area in the town.  As well as the market there are also antique shops and interesting small stores.

The old port is disused today but visitors can still admire the scenery from one of the open air soda fountains situated along the waterfront of the old port.  Good sandy beaches can be found away from the town centre and there is a large variety of flora and fauna across the island.  Several healing hot water springs are to be found at several resorts on the island which are very popular places to visit.
