Heraklion International Airport, “Nikos Kazantzakis”, is situated 5km east of the city of Heraklion on the island of Crete, Greece.  The airport can be easily accessed via Icarou Street. Taxis and car hire can be found at the airport and major car rental Heraklion companies have desks within the terminal. The local bus service is first-rate and buses depart from the airport every few minutes from early in the morning until late at night from Monday to Saturday.  The service is not so frequent on Sundays.
Facilities at the airport include an ATM, payphones and baby changing facilities.  Eating facilities are provided by a restaurant and several snack-bars.  Two duty-free shops are located in the departure areas.  Chocolates, newspapers and cigarettes can be purchased at a kiosk.  Full access facilities are available for disabled travellers. 

No hotels are actually situated at the airport but many hotels are situated in the town centre, approx. 4km from the airport, including Atlantis Hotel, Lato Boutique Hotel, Hotel Mirabello and Marin Dream Hotel. Heraklion is an important industrial port city and the capital of Crete.  The city is situated in the north of the island.  Route E75 runs through the city and links Heraklion with the other foremost cities of Crete – Agios Nikolaos, Chania and Rethymno.

There are a number of sandy beaches along the coast out of town and some offer watersports facilities.  The old town of Heraklion has many Venetian monuments such as the 15th-century defence walls and the fortress which guards the harbour.  There is an excellent Archaeological Museum which displays thousands of ancient artifacts and several waterparks and an aquarium are also located in the area.
