Mannheim City Airport is two miles from the centre of Mannheim in the suburb of Neuostheim. It was once a successful commercial airport but the advent of larger planes meant that the size restrictions placed on its runways by its urban location made commercial flights untenable. The last commercial flight departed in 2010 being replaced by a slick general aviation set up that caters for private planes. Mannheim is a very important industrial city and as such was bombed heavily in the Second World War.
