SUMMARY


London Stansted Airport is the third largest of five airports in London and the main London airport for low-cost flights. It is also the fastest growing airport in Europe. The airport offers 44 scheduled and charter flights which serves 145 destinations in 32 countries Ryanair has a base at London Stansted Airport and it offers more than one hundred routes across Europe. There are also flights with Easyjet to places such as Alicante, Glasgow International, Nice and Prague. This passenger airport has one terminal but three satellites for departure gates. London Stansted Airport is interesting architecturally as the terminal was designed by the company of legendary architect Norman Foster. The idea was to make it as easy as possible for passengers to get from the car park through the check-in procedure. It also an attractive building which has the appearance of a swan in flight. A fourth satellite at London Stansted Airport is nearing completion.


HISTORY


London Stansted Airport is a relatively new airport which was built in recognition of London's place at the pinnacle of world financial services. Between the years 1997 to 2007 passenger numbers at Stansted grew rapidly as the airport added so many no-frills flights. Passenger traffic peaked in 2007 but since then has been in decline due to the worldwide recession. The airport has been owned by the British Airports Authority Ltd although in 2009 the UK Competition Commission said that London Stansted Airport should be sold by BAA within two years. The decision was never enforced.


DIRECTIONS


London Stansted airport is located at Stansted Mountfitchet in Essex and is 30 miles to the north east of Central London. Take the M11 motorway and exit on the A120 following signs for the airport.


 

FACILITIES


Stansted airport offers facilities for every kind of passenger.

For families there are family rooms located at gates 13, 33, 43, 59 and baby changing between gates 81 – 88 near to the ladies toilet.

For business travellers conference and meeting rooms are available in the Radisson SAS and Hilton hotels and at the United Business Centre.

Lounges are available at gates 16 and 49 and you can get freshly prepared snacks, newspapers, tea and coffee, all of which are complementary. There are also televisions and full table service.

The Stansted Airport Transit System connects the satellite gates with the main terminal.

The airport has everything that you need in the way of amenities including ATMs and bureaux de change, luggage services and lost property as well as internet access.

There is a train station at the airport. You can also travel every 15 minutes to Liverpool Street Station in London.
For disabled passengers there are all the normal facilities including induction loops for the hard of hearing, armrests on chairs and directional signs in black and yellow for the partially-sighted.


SHOPPING


Stansted airport offers a huge range of different shops. There are clothes shops like Monsoon, shoe shops like Clerks, music shops such as Dixons and in true British style even a betting shop - Coral. It is possible to do some gift-shopping there. For instance you can get a tie for him from Tie Rack, or some lingerie for her from La Senza. If you need toiletries there is also a Boots while MoneyCorp can allow you to change foreign currency.
