SUMMARY

Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport is the largest and busiest airport in Italy and it serves the capital city Rome. For this reason it is also known as Rome Fiumicino Airport. More than 35 million passengers use it every year, many of them flying with the national airline Alitalia which has a hub at Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport. Over the years Alitalia has invested a lot of money in improving the airport. The airport is named after the genius Leonardo da Vinci who came up with the design for the first plane and was an incredible inventor and artist, among other talents.  Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport is the 27th busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic and it has four runways.

HISTORY

Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport has been operating since the beginning of the 1960s. It took over as the main international airport from the smaller Rome Ciampino Airport, which is still used for domestic and charter flights. Over the years two runways were added to the initial two runways. During the 1990s a lot of work was done on improving the terminals. Domestic and international piers were opened as well as a satellite with loading bridges. The new domestic terminal A was opened in 2000 and cargo operations were expanded in 2004 with the Cargo City terminal. In 2008 terminal 5 was opened. Recently some of the terminal names have been changed. For instance terminal A is now known as T1.

DIRECTIONS

Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport is accessible via the GRA ring road around Rome. If you are travelling from Fiumicino you can take the A12 highway and follow signs to the airport. The airport is located 16 miles to the south west of Rome.
