Although the United States has warned its citizens of a possible Al Qaeda attack in Europe, many tourists have not been put off travelling.

The US Department of State issued the warning last week saying that a Mumbai-style attack could take place at a major European landmark.

Last year the Indian city of Mumbai by was besieged by gunman who killed a number of people and created havoc.

Top level American and British intelligence now suggests that something similar could happen in places such as Canary Wharf in London or the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The British Special Air Service said that the country would be totally unprepared for such a threat.

Yet life carried on as normal at Logan International airport, which is the main airport for the city of Boston on the eastern seaboard of America.

Because of the potential for terrorist attacks in Europe the warning also said that all American travelers should register with US embassies before leaving. Yet it was not a formal warning which might explain why some travellers took it lightly.

Rob Lutts of Salem said that he had no plans to interrupt a 25th wedding anniversary trip with his wife to Italy for what was a minor concern.

He said: “Our plans to ride the Eurostar train on the way to Florence and Naples are still on. The warning seems like a tempest in a teapot.”

Along with other travellers questioned at the airport, Mr Lutts believed that being too scared to travel would make the terrorists think that they had won. Others accused the media of over-exaggerating the seriousness of the situation in order to sell newspapers.

Passenger Christina Corban, on her way back to Italy, said: “I am used to traveling all over the place. If I got affected by all the rumors, I would never go anywhere, never get on a plane.”
