SUMMARY

Frankfurt Airport is known by Germans as Frankfurt am Main Airport and it is the busiest passenger airport in Germany. This huge facility is also one of the busiest airports in Europe and the world with more than 50 million passengers using it every year. In July 2007 Frankfurt airport welcomed its billionth passenger. . In fact it serves more international destinations than anywhere else. Furthermore it is the busiest airport in Europe in terms of cargo traffic. Frankfurt Airport has two terminals, with terminal one being older and terminal two being more modern. Lufthansa also offers a VIP terminal to its customers.

HISTORY

Plans to build an airport at Frankfurt were put on hold during the depression of the 1930s and then revived by the Nazis. The Rhein-Main Airport and Airship Base opened in 1936 and was the second largest airport in Germany during the Second World War when it was often used by the military. Frankfurt airport contains the Rhein Main Air Base which was a major airlift base for the US from 1947 until 2005 when Fraport assumed the ownership of the airport. The Zeppelin and Hindenburg airships were based at Frankfurt airport until the Hindenburg disaster of 1937. Today there are plans to expand Frankfurt Airport with a fourth runway and a new Terminal 3, the former of which has been held up by environmental concerns.

DIRECTIONS

Frankfurt airport is located 7.5 miles to the south of the city centre of Frankfurt.

The main routes to Frankfurt airport are the A3 between Cologne and Munich and the A5 between Hanover and Basel. The latter road can be accessed by taking the A67. Look for the Frankfurter Kreuz junction for access to the airport from the federal road B43.

FACILITIES

There is a free skyline shuttle which goes between terminals one and two. There are also free shuttle buses located outside of each entrance which go between the terminals.
For business travellers the airport offers a large conference centre and you can rent out presentation rooms in terminal two. Both terminals have comprehensive banking services including ATMs, as well as bureaux de change.

If you need help with your luggage you can call on a luggage porter service on 069 6902 2122. Lost property is located on the first level of terminal one. Throughout both terminals disabled passengers will find elevators, ramps and automatic doors.

There are numerous hotels near Frankfurt airport and you can even walk from terminal 1 to the Sheraton hotel under a covered walkway. In terminal one there is a 24-hour medical centre.

SHOPPING

Frankfurt airport has more than 100 airport shops and they include fashion boutiques, travel agencies and newsagents. Pharmacies are available all over the airport. A large shopping mall called Marktplatz recently opened on level two of terminal two. If you are looking for children's fashion then you can go to Pfüller Kidskonzept, while Bree offers exceptional handbags. There are numerous high-end stores including Porsche design. In typical continental style you can also visit a sex shop called Beate Uhse. Some of the restaurants in Frankfurt airport are open 24 hours a day.

DUTY FREE

Heinemann Duty Free in terminal one is one of the main purveyors of fashion, liquor, and beauty products. Because the store is so large the prices are low and there are often special offers. On most of their products they can guarantee a 30 per cent saving on what you would pay in a German high street store. However these savings do not apply to tobacco or alcohol if you are flying within the European Union. The shop offers the option of pre-ordering your items on the Internet for collection when you arrive at Frankfurt airport.
