WorldWide Airport Car Hire

Fly Drive Ski Holidays in Austria

There are three main routes into the big ski areas of Austria, with Innsbruck airport car hire offering proximity to some of the big names in Austrian skiing such as St Anton, Kitzbuhel and Solden. Salzburg is a bigger airport that has great access to the ski holiday resorts just to the south by autobahn including Flachau. Munich is to the north of both the Tirol and Salzburgerland ski areas but offers very many flight options being the major transport hub in the region. Munich airport car hire is a great option for resorts such as Soll. Things to look out for when travelling by road in Austria in the winter are tyres, tolls and passes amongst other things. All car rentals picked up in Austria during the winter will have winter tyres fitted by law - it is always worth checking but there are strict laws on the deployment of winter tyres in the winter months.

Car hire from outside of Austria, including Munich in Germany is more hit and miss - some have winter tyres and some don’t. Make it clear at the time of booking of the hire car that you will be travelling into Austria and will require winter tyres.

Tolls are required on all autobahns in Austria. A vignette is a sticker that is attached to the windscreen of the car and they can be bought from most petrol stations and are sold for varying durations. Travelling without one is possible on minor roads but the Austrian officials who monitor the roads are out in force over the winter and at peak times and are skilled at snaring cars whether it be at slip roads leading to the main valleys or service roads at service stations. Fines are hefty, possibly disproportionate and the officials are not known to be overly forgiving. Some hire cars will have a vignette, other not so really check on this.

Mountain passes are the last hurdle to overcome. Obvious road transits from Lech to Warth, Paznaun to Montafon and Obergurgl into Italy are all closed throughout the winter. Follow your GPS and you could be in for a long round trip or a long wait until spring. As well as these obstacles to watch for, keep an eye out for stunning villages, cascading glaciers and ski area after ski area.
